Baby Pac-Man Update
Baby Pac-Man December 28th, 2007I ordered a new CPO, sideart, and a playfield overlay from PhoenixArcade.com right before Christmas, and it came faster than I expected. Here’s what arrived:
The cabinet on this Baby Pac is in horrible shape, but getting this art in inspired me to get going on it. I figured the first thing I should do is gut it. I started to do that today, but was hindered by the fact that I have hardly any room in my garage. I managed to rearrange some of the project games in there…stuffing all but 3 in the back…
…then I hung up 3 of the bikes that never get ridden:
The fourth bike that is still sitting on the ground is not ours. We’ve been bike sitting it for about 4 years now, and the plan is to get it back to its owner ASAP. To the right of the above picture is Baby Pac, Space Invaders, and Breakout - all three of them blocking the garage door.
You can see them a little better here:
I pulled all the boards out of Baby Pac. They all look pretty good except for the MPU board which has battery corrosion damage. I clipped the old battery off the board and will work on it when I feel motivated. I pulled the playfield out, and plan on working on that next. It’s not in horrible shape, but does have typical wear in certain areas. I’m hoping when I’m done it will look brand new.
In order to work on that, I have to build a box to sit the playfield on top of so as to not damage everything on the underside while sanding it. Here’s what the bottom of the playfield looks like (in case you’re bored):

The new artwork looks great. Is it silkscreened? I’m not too familiar with pinball machines, are most of the play field graphics usually stickers?

I’m really happy with the artwork. Phoenix Arcade does great stuff.
It is silkscreened. Most play fields as far as I know where silkscreened right on the wood. In this case, there is no easy way to do that. I’m hoping the overlay will look just as good.

I hadn’t realized that before…but the artwork is printed right onto the wood, and to put the new playfield on you have to sand down the old playfield to get the art off…just like a video game I guess, just a little more of a pain.
Are you going to plug the holes as well to keep the dust off the connections?
Post photos as you work, this is one of those machines that have a ton of people looking to restore them, but not enough great photo content to demonstrate it.

I covered some of the lamp socket holes…I’m posting another update on this now.

Very cool, I’ll be waiting to see your process too.
