The Mist
Uncategorized November 26th, 2007We just saw The Mist yesterday. Here’s the trailer for it:
I was a big Stephen King fan when I was younger. I read this story originally in the short story collection The Skeleton Crew. I don’t remember the story very well, but I do remember that it was good. I also remember having a text adventure game “The Mist” based on this movie for my Apple IIc, similar to Zork. Most of the Stephen King books I’ve read more recently have been disappointing. I read “The Cell”, which was good throughout the entire book, and then the end just sucked big time. He didn’t tie anything together like most good writers do. He just ended it, and I felt cheated.
Some of his film adaptations have been great. Some just OK. I saw 1408 and that was just average for me. I’m saying all this so you know I don’t just go nuts over everything associated with Stephen King.
Now, about The Mist movie. It was incredible. It keeps you pretty scared through the whole thing, and most movies don’t do that to me. At one point, the audience actually clapped. It had some disturbing parts, and the end was unexpected. I would highly recommend this movie. I would also highly recommend you don’t bring any really young kids to it. It’s got a more disturbing feel to it then a typical scary monster movie. I can’t say much more than that without giving away the plot.

I also happen to love Stephen King books, at least the older ones. The newest one I have even attempted to “read” was the one about Tom Gordon, and I got that as a book on tape. I couldn’t finish it, too boring.
I haven’t seen too many of his books that have been make into movies, the ones I have were tv movies and those were ok for the time (90’s) and the technology available.
I’ll think about renting The Mist when it comes on video based on your review.

I couldn’t finish that Tom Gordon book either.
When I read Cell, throughout the whole book it was really good. He keeps you wondering what the hell is going on, and how he’s going to tie it together, and then he just doesn’t! I’m not a writer, but I think anyone could get people very interested in something if you bring a lot of interesting elements in there and make them extremely curious as to how it’s going to end. It was almost like he never even thought of the end of the book, and when he had to end it he just did. Have you ever seen a movie that is somewhat OK and all of a sudden the credits start rolling, and you are like: WTF! Where’s the rest of the movie? That was what Cell was like. It makes me not want to bother reading his stuff anymore.
I really like Dan Brown. I’ve read all his books and they are equally good. I’ve heard that he actually writes the end of his books first, or at least plans the whole thing out before starting.
