Token Sign Project
Uncategorized August 27th, 2007Hey there. Quite a while back I spotted a pretty cool hand painted sign from an old arcade on eBay:
This sucker was big…probably 3 or 4 feet tall from what I remember. I placed a bid on it but ended up getting outbid. I decided to make my own. I put the image in Photoshop and corrected for perspective. Then I brought it into Adobe Illustrator and redrew it. Here is the end result:
As you can see, there are a few differences. The bulk of it I redrew. The font used for the “BECAUSE OF STATE…” text didn’t seem practical to redraw so I used a similar font. I also dropped out the “CONN.” state abbreviation. The other thing that differs is the “Group & Party” text at the bottom. In the original sign, it looked a bit strange and after I redrew it I didn’t like it so I used a font for that as well.
After making the file, I found a guy that said he could make me one printed on vinyl attached to an alluminum sign blank. I’m not too thrilled with the end result. If you look very closely at it, it looks like it was printed on a cheap printer. The colors aren’t bright, and it’s spotty. Here is the final sign above my token machine:
I was contemplating selling these at some point, but I’m not a sign maker. I may try to sell them someday, but I don’t have any definite plans to do so. So….I’m making the Adobe Illustrator file available to anyone that wants it. I designed this with proportions to print 18″ x 24″, but it will scale up or down fine. If you want this for your own personal use, feel free to print it and slap it on the wall. If you want to make these and sell them that’s cool too, but I’d appreciate it if you let me know you are doing so. I would also love a copy of one that doesn’t look like it was printed on an inkjet made in 1996.
