Moon Patrol Returns (almost!)
Moon Patrol, Restorations, Videos May 9th, 2007I finally finished painting! Check it out:
In case you forgot what this puppy looked like before:
I still have lots left to do, but it feels good to actually see it look like a Moon Patrol again.
The method I used to clean up the drips with Goof Off worked pretty good. I ended up using Mr. Clean Magic Erasers instead of a rag and a ton of Goof Off. By the time I was done, I think I was starting to hallucinate. I sprayed the Goof Off on the sponge, and wiped gently trying not to rub the edge of the stencil more than I had to. The paint started to smear at first and made quite a mess, but came completely off after I kept going over it. The vinyl stencil held up pretty good while doing that, but did start to lift a little in just a couple of spots where I probably scrubbed too much. Because of the screw up, the edges on the yellow layer look a bit harder than they should.
They almost look like stickers, but I think it still looks good. There are a couple of spots that I want to touch up with a brush.
One nice bonus…the stencils came with registration mark stickers for the Williams logo:
I let Linda put those stickers on, so she gets credit for finishing it. I have to order the control panel overlay and t-molding so it will be a little longer before it’s done.
I found a video today that seems appropriate to end this post, seeing as this has now returned to a Moon Patrol (well….almost!) and we are going to be returning to the moon soon:

Wow, that looks incredible. I wish Prok had stencils like that available for pac-man, would make it much easier to get started on that machine. It would be great if twobits.com even had stencils, I just don’t want to use a big sticker from them, but with your hard work already done on the artwork, should hopefully be able to get something going.

Thanks! Pac-Man is going to be a major undertaking, and I definitely know what you mean. I wouldn’t want to go the sticker route either.

Hi, I just got a Moon Patrol original. Everything seems to work except there is no background music during gameplay. That is one of the nuances that made Moon Patrol great. As part of my refurb project I want to look into this. Any ideas where to start?
Thanks!

Hi Geoff,
Congrats on getting a Moon Patrol. My record with repairing Moon Patrol PCBs isn’t too good.
So, you have sound but just no music?
I don’t want to insult you by giving you basic info if you already know what your doing. Did you do the normal stuff? By that, I mean:
I usually do that type of thing first before I try to troubleshoot further. If you still have a problem after that, I’d get the manual and schematics from CrazyKong.com. The manual shows the DIP switch settings. There is one for test mode. I’d put it in test mode and see what it reports on screen. Page 5 of the manual tells you how to do the tests and what they mean. One of the entries in the sound test is for the background music, opening music, ending music, etc… I’d test those. Page 10 in the manual actually has some good info on how to resolve sound issues. The last line on that page says that if sounds 2-6 are missing, chip 1F is faulty. Any other sounds missing or duplicated – Chip 1J or 1F are faulty. So, you may have an issue with 1J or 1F. I *think* those chips are on the CPU Board based on what I see on that page.

Hi Jamie,
Thanks for the response. I jumped the gun a bit on the post as it really was a simple matter of reseating some of the connectors. I assumed it was something a bit more difficult than that because it seemed odd that sound worked but not music – I figured it was a secondary audio channel or something. Anyway, thanks and I am really looking forward to this project. I already cleaned up the interior (even found it came with manuals that were so covered in gunk I hadn’t seen them) and next will take out all of the PCBs so I can clean them up. It must have been mothballed for awhile because it is covered in thick crud – but it works great.

Hi Geoff,
That’s great, glad you got it working.
